psychological astrology

Dermod Moore Dip.Psychosynthesis,Dip.Psych.Astrol., was born in 1963 in Dublin. A former actor and Speech & Drama teacher, he is a personal columnist for nearly ten years. He also created and edited Apollon, the Journal of Psychological Astrology from 1998-2001, and teaches at the Centre for Psychological Astrology. He is both a psychotherapist and astrologer. Please see here to find out more about his counselling/psychotherapy practice. This page is geared more towards describing astrological work, whereas therapy has a different dynamic, and does not lend itself easily to being described in brochures like this.

Psychological Astrology

As a consultant astrologer, Dermod offers a sensitive, compassionate evaluation of the symbolism of your birth chart. He is not a fortune-teller, nor does he make predictions. Anyone coming to him seeking such certainties will be gently encouraged to examine the feelings behind such a search. Having written about sexuality and relationships for years, he is particularly at ease shedding some light on this often uncomfortable area. His experience as a Psychosynthesis therapist enables him to blend the two disciplines into a uniquely memorable and life-enhancing  experience, where your soul is encouraged to sing.

Psychological Astrology: A Brief History

It is less than a hundred years ago, after the works of Freud and Jung opened a few doors into our inner lives, that Psychological Astrology was born. Jung himself was fascinated with astrology, and learned to cast horoscopes to "find a clue to the core of psychological truth."  Previously, astrology had solely been event-oriented, or divinatory, or concerned with matters of state. One of the first astrologers to work with the new psychological theories was the American Dane Rudhyar, who developed the concept of 'person-centred' astrology. The Hubers in Switzerland developed their own school of astrology based on the psychological work of Assagioli. Probably the best known exponent of the art is Dr Liz Greene. A Jungian analyst, she set up the Centre for Psychological Astrology in London in 1983 with the late Howard Sasportas, a psychosynthesis psychotherapist. It was set up to foster the cross-fertilization of astrology with the fields of depth, humanistic, and transpersonal psychology.
Dermod studied there from 1993-1996, and is delighted to be a member of staff there.

The Philosophy of Psychological Astrology

Astrology provides us with one of the richest storehouses of myth in our culture. Regardless of the divinatory component, it is one of the most revealing resources of our own collective consciousness, with the whole pantheon of classical mythology arrayed in a fascinating dynamic encyclopedia in the heavens. Each moment tells a story, one that is never repeated. Psychological astrology posits that by studying a "snapshot" of a particular moment, the moment of birth, the story that is revealed offers a clue to our own inner landscape, our own particular journey. It offers the opportunity to work with one's own "blueprint" and maximise the potential for growth and understanding; especially when things don't go according to plan. It is based on a holistic philosophy, encouraging acceptance of all parts of ourselves. It is not predictive in any concrete sense, but if the forecast is for cold weather, it is always wise to wrap up warmly.

When is it useful?

A consultation with a psychological astrologer is useful when one is at a crossroads, and one is faced with choices that may seem difficult or impossible. The insight that the discipline can offer in such circumstances is unique, especially in the context of human relationships. If a problem needs to be worked with further, then you may be guided towards an appropriate therapy, which can be anything from gardening to dance to psychotherapy. Psychological Astrology offers you the chance to participate in the unfolding of your own fate, to gain some insight into your life's patterns. Perhaps most of all, astrology offers the gift of self-acceptance; useful, of course, at any time of life.

How it works

To arrange a consultation with Dermod, you will need to supply him with the following information: your date of birth, your time of birth, and where you were born. Your chart will be calculated, and studied for a while before the meeting. It is not something that can be done on the spur of the moment; indeed, the more thought you give to the issues that are arising for you, the more constructive the dialogue can be. The issues discussed will be either those that you bring to the session, or those that the chart suggests. In most cases it is both - a Metalog, which is defined as "that which is being discussed is also arising".

Dermod is a member of the
Association of Professional Astrologers, and the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, and, as a member of both, he is bound by their Codes of Ethics and Practice, and their Complaints Procedures.
