Willie Shoemaker died on 12 October 2003. In a famous career, which lasted from 1949 until 1990, he rode 8,833 winning horses. He was the world's winningmost jockey from September 1970, (when he passed Johnny Longden's record of 6,032), until December 1999, when his total was passed by Laffit Pincay Jr. Shoemaker won 11 US Triple Crown races, including the Kentucky Derby four times and was champion rider in North America in terms of races won five times, all in the 1950's. His best ride in the UK was on Hawaiian Sound, on whom he finished second to Shirley Heights in the 1978 Epsom derby. After commencing a career in training horses, in 1991 he was badly injured in a car crash, which left him paralysed from the neck down.

Adam Fronteras has written to offer the birth data of bass guitarist Herbie Flowers. 19th May 1938, 01.30 Isleworth, Middlesex. From Herbie Flowers himself.

Herbie Flowers is one of the most respected session bassplayers having appeared on literally thousands of hit recordings by artists as diverse as McCartney, Mancini, Sinatra, Harry Nilsson, David Essex, Tom Jones, Jools Holland, Blue Mink and was bass guitarist in tour and album line ups in the 70's for David Bowie and Marc Bolan/T.Rex. He is, perhaps, best known for his portmanteau bass-line on Lou Reed's Walk on the Wild Side and for being one of the founder members of Sky, (along with John Williams). He has also played tuba with many of the world's leading symphony orchestras. Herbie also wrote the Clive Dunn Novelty Hit Grandad.
